Riding out cerebral palsy
Program helps sick children improve their coordination

July 18, 2005 - At the beginning of a therapeutic riding class, 11-year-old Ben Gibbs, of Vienna, who suffers from cerebral palsy, gets help saddling up on his horse, Cinder, from Breeana Bornhorst, program director at the Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program located just west of Fairfax City on Thursday. Cerebral palsy makes movement tough for 11-year-old Ben Gibbs. The disorder made the Vienna boy's calf muscles so spastic he needed shots to keep them stretched, said his mother, Carla Sanchez.
But since starting a therapeutic horse riding program five years ago, he hasn't needed a single shot.
Therapeutic gait
Because a horse's gait is similar to the movement of a walking human, riding a horse helps improve balance and coordination, said Breeana Bornhorst, who coaches Ben weekly at the Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program in Fairfax.
Though therapeutic, riding horses is not considered therapy, Bornhorst said, adding no doctors are involved with the program.
Ben's shyness around animals has given way to a love for riding, Sanchez said. "The experience of him continuing to gain confidence is the goal," she said.
Nature of the disorder
Cerebral palsy is a group of conditions that affect muscle movement and coordination. Cerebral palsy develops after specific areas of the brain are damaged before, during or shortly after birth.
